Love in the Afternoon
[Animated Poster]
ROLE: Motion Designer
TOOLS: Procreate, Photoshop, Aftereffects
OVERVIEW
A 40-second animated reinterpretation of Saul Bass’s iconic 1957 Love in the Afternoon poster. The animation blends original illustration with motion design, starting with a hand-drawn opening sequence and transitioning into a dynamic reimagining of the poster’s key elements.
CHALLENGE
-
Bringing motion and depth to a static, vintage poster while preserving the instantly recognizable Bass aesthetic.
-
Balancing original illustration with deconstructed elements of the existing poster—without losing the design’s visual elegance.
-
Creating a cohesive animation that feels both nostalgic and modern in tone.
PROCESS
-
Illustrated the opening scene in Procreate, setting the scene and mood before the main reveal.
-
Used After Effects 3D tools to add depth and subtle movement to the illustrated setting.
-
In Photoshop, deconstructed the original poster by isolating key elements like the hands, letters, and blinds.
-
Animated those components in After Effects—layering movement, manipulating scale, and introducing transitions to breathe life into the composition.
OUTCOME
-
The two-part structure (illustration setup + animated poster) provides a compelling visual narrative with rhythm and surprise.
-
Demonstrates seamless integration of illustration, graphic design, and motion—showcasing versatility in both mediums.
